2009 PRE MAJORS FUTURE STARS TOURNAMENT
The Dixie Baseball Pre-Majors Future Stars Tournament was held the weekend of
June 12-14, 2009 in Eufaula, Alabama. The event featured top 15-16 year-old Dixie
Pre-Majors Baseball participants. This unique wood bat tournament showcased the
individual talents of the players.
After two days of round robin format play the South squad finished the event
undefeated at 3-0. The South team was scheduled to play the North Stars (2-1) in the
tournament finals. The North Stars only loss was a 14-4 game played against a
strong South team. Straight-line winds and a heavy rain caused the cancellation of
the final game. 2009 team rosters appear in this article.
Players begin arriving Friday afternoon and were issued uniform tops. Old Hickory
Bat Company donated all of the uniform tops for the tournament. Each team was
allowed practice time and many of the players took the opportunity to meet some of
their teammates for the first time. Following the practice session; all players were
treated to a meal provided by the Eufaula Parks & Recreation Department. Friday
evening activities were capped off with a HR Derby. Austin Barnett of Lakeland,
Florida edged out Dakota Maldonado of Eufaula, Alabama to win the event.
Saturday morning activities included a short Opening Ceremony. Jerry Brewer,
Tournament Chairman presented the City of Eufaula with a Host appreciation
plaque. The Eufaula/Barbour County Tourism Council was instrumental in
providing the necessary funding for the event. Dixie Boys Baseball, Inc. working with
the Eufaula Parks & Recreation Department organized a showcase event for the
participants and the spectators. First Baptist Church of Eufaula graciously provided
the Sunday morning breakfast for participants and guests.
J. Sandy Jones, Commissioner/CEO Dixie Boys Baseball commented, “We really
appreciate the City of Eufaula Parks & Recreation Department submitting a formal
bid for the 2009 Dixie Pre-Majors Future Stars Event. Keef Pettis, Parks & Recreation
Director along with the local community volunteers worked to make this a very
special event for all participants and spectators. Jerry Brewer, Deputy Commissioner
for Dixie Pre-Majors Baseball was very complimentary of the entire effort. I would like
to thank Mr. Brewer, the excellent group of coaches, our sponsors and the Eufaula
Parks & Recreation staff for the success with our 2009 event.”
Dixie Boys Baseball, Inc. was founded in 1957 in Alexandria, Louisiana. In 1973,
Dixie Majors Baseball was added as a division of the program to serve the needs of
15 and older age participants. Dixie Baseball has made a concerted effort to increase
opportunities for the 15 and older age player. The Dixie Pre-Majors Future Stars
Event now in its fourth year was established for this sole purpose. Players of
appropriate league age are invited to apply for participation in the 2010 event. Dixie
Boys Baseball also participates in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars program.
